“PRACTICAL CHINESE READER” Vols V and VI are textbooks of modern Chinese compiled by Beijing Language Institute for advanced foreign readers. They consist of 30 lessons including more than 3000 words and everyday expressions. In order to build up the readers' ability of using Chinese in natural situations, all the texts in Vol.V are original pieces of a wide range of themes on current affairs, which are various in form, style and length, and those in Vol.VI are passages excerpted from literary works, which are provided with representative significance, and each of which is complete in content with a consistent plot. A brief introduction to an author, background and explanatory notes etc. are provided at the end of text if necessary. Each lesson has some examples and notes and various exercises for the important words and expressions. All the new words,notes, examples and exercises are given in Chinese for the purpose of developing readers' ability to solve practical language problems.
